1. Pre-Installation Assessment

Before any work begins, we carry out a full assessment of your kitchen space. This includes:

  • Ensuring the cooker’s installation area complies with safety standards.
  • Checking the location and accessibility of your existing gas supply.
  • Verifying the legal ventilation requirements.

2. Appliance & Site Preparation

We prepare the site by:

  • Carrying out a gas tightness test on the existing pipework to ensure there are no leaks before connecting the new appliance.
  • Turning off the gas supply safely.
  • Clearing the area and protecting nearby surfaces.
  • Unpacking and inspecting the new cooker for any transit damage.

3. Connection to Gas Supply

Our qualified technician will:

  • Fit a new gas hose and bayonet fitting (if required).
  • Connect the cooker to the gas supply.
  • Secure the appliance in place and ensure stability.

4. Safety Testing & Compliance

Once connected, we carry out a full set of safety checks, including:

  • Burner ignition and flame pattern inspection.
  • Checking of any safety devices.
  • Measuring the gas rate of the appliance to ensure it is operating within the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Carry out another tightness test to check for leaks.

5. Customer Demonstration

After installation and testing, we walk you through:

  • How to safely operate your new gas cooker.
  • Basic maintenance tips.

Installation FAQs

We’ve put together this list of frequently asked questions to help you understand what’s involved, why professional installation is essential, and how to get your new cooker up and running safely and smoothly. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to contact us – we’re happy to help.

Can I install my gas cooker myself if I have the right tools?

No. It is illegal and highly dangerous to attempt a DIY gas cooker installation unless you are a qualified Gas Safe engineer.

Installing a gas cooker is not as simple as just connecting a hose. A proper gas installation involves several critical safety steps that only a Gas Safe registered engineer is qualified to carry out. Here’s what’s typically included:

  • Correct hose selection – The hose must match your fuel type (natural gas or LPG) and be securely and legally connected.
  • Ventilation check – Your room must have adequate airflow to safely use a gas appliance.
  • Location assessment – The space must meet regulations for clearance around the cooker, especially near flammable surfaces or materials.
  • Safety device testing – Features like flame failure devices and auto shut-off valves are tested to ensure they work correctly.
  • Gas rate check – Engineers measure the gas flow to confirm the appliance is burning fuel at the correct rate. If the gas rate is too low or too high, the appliance may burn inefficiently, which can lead to the production of carbon monoxide – a colourless, odourless and potentially deadly gas.
  • Tightness test – A pressure test is carried out to ensure there are no gas leaks and that no joints were disturbed during installation.
  • Flame picture check – The flame must burn a consistent blue colour, indicating efficient and safe combustion.

All of this is done to ensure your safety, compliance with UK gas regulations, and to protect your home and family.

How much does gas cooker installation cost?

Our prices for gas cooker installation start from £90. This covers a standard installation. If any additional parts are required or if there are pipework adjustments needed to complete the installation safely and correctly, there may be an additional charge. We’ll always discuss any extra costs with you before starting the work, so there are no surprises. For a more accurate quote, feel free to contact us with a few details about your setup — we’re happy to help!

How long does the installation take?

It may take around 1 to 2 hours to install a gas cooker or hob. If any additional work is needed, it may take longer.

What do I need to prepare before the engineer arrives?
  • Ensure the area around the cooker is clear and accessible.
  • Have your new cooker ready on-site.
  • Ensure someone 18 or over is present during the appointment.
Do you remove and dispose of old gas cookers or hobs?

No, we don’t remove or dispose of any existing gas cooking appliances. We only install new or re-install existing appliances that have already been safely disconnected.

However, we can make your gas installation safe before any kitchen work is carried out, including disconnecting the appliance and capping off the gas supply to allow for renovations or safe removal.

If you need to get rid of your old appliance, we recommend contacting your local council’s bulky waste collection service or using a licensed removal service like the British Heart Foundation, Reuse Network or local recycling companies in London.

Feel free to ask if you’d like help finding a reliable service!

What if I don’t have a gas supply where I want the cooker?

We can assess whether a gas line can be extended or modified. Additional work and charges will apply, and we’ll discuss all options before proceeding.

Troubleshooting Common Gas Cooker Problems

Having issues with your gas cooker? From burners that won’t light to ovens that won’t heat properly, these are some of the most common problems customers face.

Gas burner won’t ignite

If your gas hob won’t light, the first thing to check is whether you can hear the usual clicking sound when turning the knob. If there’s no click, it may be a power issue, so check that the plug is connected properly or that the circuit hasn’t tripped. If it clicks but doesn’t light, the burner may be blocked. Try cleaning the burner cap and ensuring there’s no food or grease obstructing the holes. Also, make sure the burner cap is sitting correctly. If it still doesn’t ignite or you smell gas, stop immediately and contact a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Weak or uneven flame

A weak or uneven flame on your gas cooker often means the burner holes are partially blocked. This can happen due to food debris or grease buildup. Use a pin or brush to gently clean the holes and check that the burner parts are properly assembled and dry. A healthy flame should burn blue and steady. If the flame is yellow or orange, this indicates incomplete combustion, which can be dangerous and lead to carbon monoxide. In that case, turn off the appliance and get it checked by a professional.

Gas smell when using the cooker

If you ever smell gas while using your cooker or even when it’s off, this could be a serious safety issue. Turn off the gas supply immediately, open all windows and doors to ventilate the space, and do not use any electrical switches or appliances. Call the National Gas Emergency Helpline on 0800 111 999 right away. Do not attempt to investigate or fix the issue yourself. Always treat any gas smell as an emergency.

Oven not heating up properly

If your gas oven isn’t getting hot or seems to take too long to heat, first check if the flame is lighting at the bottom of the oven. You should be able to see a steady blue flame. If you have an electric ignition oven, make sure the power supply is working and that the oven dial is set correctly. If everything appears to be in order but the oven still isn’t heating properly, the issue could be with the thermostat, gas valve or igniter. These components will need to be checked and possibly replaced by a qualified engineer.

Clicking sound won’t stop

A constantly clicking sound from your gas hob can be caused by a stuck ignition switch or moisture inside the ignition system. This can happen after a spill or if the hob has been cleaned recently. Make sure the hob is completely dry and clean around the ignition button. If the clicking continues even when the knobs are turned off, there may be a fault with the ignition switch, which should be repaired or replaced by an engineer.

Gas cuts out when you release the knob

If the gas flame cuts out every time you release the control knob, this may point to a faulty flame failure device (FFD). The FFD is a safety feature designed to shut off the gas if no flame is detected. Try holding the knob in for 5 to 10 seconds longer after lighting to give the sensor time to activate. If the flame still goes out, the FFD may be malfunctioning and should be inspected by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Oven door won’t close properly

An oven door that doesn’t shut fully can lead to heat loss and uneven cooking. This problem is often caused by worn or damaged door seals or misaligned hinges. Check the rubber seal around the door for any signs of wear or food buildup. Make sure the hinges are intact and not bent. If the door still won’t close properly, you may need a replacement seal or professional adjustment of the hinges.
